I am currently in high school and I can take an Advanced Placement math course in either calculus or statistics.
I want to study business and commerce in University, which math course should I take right now and why? By the way, any kind of math is easy for me so wether one is "harder" than the other don't matter.
Thanks in advance.
Should I take calculus or statistics AP?
Can you take both?
You will probably need both for your degree - so if you can't take both, find out if you can receive college credit for either one and take that one.
In my statistics class we learned how to attribute data to different types of graphs, compute probability and determine - through careful reading - which learned formula to use in which situation. Really, picking the right formula to use was the hardest part. After that, it's just plug and chug.
Calculus incorporates trig identities into finding derivatives and integrals... good algebra skills and knowledge of trig identities are a must.
I don't think either are "hard" per se, but if I had to I'd say calculus is the more challenging of the two.
In college I took statistics before calculus, simply because it fit my schedule better, although calculus was recommended first... Got an A in both.
Good luck, have fun!
Reply:If you're going into business, Statistics is going to be more useful because you'll probably have to take a business statistics class. Honestly, I can't imagine your having to apply differential calculus in business.
Reply:Statistics would probably be better for business/commerce. I'm not sure entirely how useful it'd be -- the best I can think of is that you will learn how to interpret the reliability of data, graphs, and studies for yourself.
AP Statistics also doesn't use any math beyond some complicated algebra, which makes it somewhat easier than a calculus class (in my opinion). However, I always found it a bit more confusing because there's a lot of different formulas and you have to remember a lot more terminology than you would in a regular math class like calculus.
Perhaps try checking the websites of prospective colleges to see what kind of credit they'll give you for good AP scores in each class (if this is a concern). Otherwise, I'd go with the Stat class.
Unless all your friends are taking calculus, that is ;)
Reply:depends on what ur good at...
but at an advanced level, calculus is also used in statistics...
i'd suggest u think about what you'd do better and then decide...
Reply:Calculus
