What are the statistics of something bad happening to you if you pick up a hitch hiker?

Thanks for your help.

What are the statistics of something bad happening to you if you pick up a hitch hiker?
I don't know of any studies Might be a good idea for "Dateline" or someone to do a study. I saw a lot more hitchhikers as a kid than I do now. I think a hitchhiker would wait a long time before getting a ride, especially a male hitch hiker. I would not roll the dice on it. I would not accept a ride either. An eleven year Fort Worth old girl ran away from home. Five different men picked her up and each of them fondled her on the side of the highway and then put her out of their car. A sixth man took her to his house and knocked her out with drugs. While she was out, he raped her. Six men offered her a ride and 100% of them proved to be child molesters.
Reply:I would think the odds of something happening are great on both sides, being picked up or picking some up. I live in a small Town, %26amp; I rarely pick up hitch hickers. I only do it if I know that person, or if it's late %26amp; I see a 13 year old girl needing a ride at night.

I still have my trigger finger on my handy dandy pepper spray though, cause you never know. I know it's illegal, but I just couldn't live with myself knowing that there's a young 13 year old girl out late at night by herself that could be picked up by someone that could rape %26amp; kill her.

(during the ride, she gets a sermon from me about the hazards of what she's doing, %26amp; to not to do it anymore).
Reply:Absolutely not!!! In the hippie era was totally different. i used to live in San Francisco and picked up a young woman with a child; she told me she did not have any milk for her child went to the store to picked up some milk, gave her some cash and on her way she went; but now days is way to risky, even if a person wants to be generous you can't not afford to loose your life! here in Reno Nevada there was a case where a generous lady opened her home to a homeless man and eventually he opened up a business with her help; she lent him $10,000.00

for the business; well to make the story short; she was found stabbed to death on a remote area. The police started to investigate the business partner ,he eventually confessed to the crime. they found out the time was getting close to repay her monies and he did not want to part with the monies so he killed her right in the business site and then drugged her to a remote area. there is this wonderful and generous person trying to give someone a new chance in life ; in returned she lost hers.
Reply:Too great.

I'm not trying to be flip, but that is actually the real answer.

Times are different. You cannot take the chance of "helping a stranger" ESPECIALLY if you are a female.

My sister is a huge "criminal psychology/serial killer" fan. She had dozens of books on the subject. I've read some of them. You need to know that a large majority of these guys look for "innocent" openings like the one you're thinking about.

DON'T DO IT.
Reply:I don't know what the exact statistics are, but even if it is 1 in 100, I wouldn't want to put myself in a situation to be that one person, since picking up a hitchhiker is not something that you HAVE to do.
Reply:ya way too great

They could be drunk on on drugs or a freak or somthing and i would not suggest picking them up.
Reply:Way too high for me i wouldnt ever trust anyone that is on the sside of the road with his thumb up....when in doubt just drive away
Reply:OK why are u trying to pick up a hitch hiker anyways
