Where can I find statistics on bicycle theft?

I am doing a report on locking bicycles and the probability of being stolen. I have no idea where to look. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Where can I find statistics on bicycle theft?
If you are looking for theft from like a public place, I would check the local police department. I think they have statistics on these sort of things. But if you are looking for bikes taken from stores, talk to the stores...

here are a couple sites I found by searching bicycle theft:

Reply:Hard statistic in the US are going to be hard to find for just bicycles.

In the US most crimes are reported to the U.S. Department of Justice for statistical purposes. So you would think that they would have it. The trouble is it is not broken down that way.

The basic Uniform Crime Report (UCR) code does not break down to the level of bicycle theft. A specific municipality or state may have a code for it and keep bike statistic but there are none I no of.

The basic UCR was developed to track trends. It does not have all crimes in it just those the developers thought, at the time it was designed, that people would report. Theft (larceny) is something that is included (included crimes are all called part 1 crimes). It is broken down as to the worth of the item, over or under $300.

Good Luck.

You can find all kinds of crime stats and info at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/
